Police rescue abduction victims in Anambra

Police in Anambra State have rescued two abduction victims and killed three suspected kidnappers after a one hour gun battle with kidnappers, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

Police said in a statement on Tuesday that one Rev. Fr. C. Okoye of the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha and another victim, Mr. Jonathan Elendu, were rescued from the suspects.

The statement said six other suspected kidnappers were arrested by the command at different locations in the state.

It also said the killed suspects were members of the dreaded gang of the Oraifite kingpin, Olisa Ifedika, popularly known as “Ofeakwu”.

They were said to be responsible for most kidnappings in the state and its environs.

The statement said that the Orsumoghu detention camp of the suspects in the Ihiala Local Government had been dismantled.

It also said the hoodlums had demanded N20m ransom before the rescue of Okoye.

Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Raphael Uzoigwe, said the command had been working to track down the fleeing members of the gang.

He said, “We want to make sure that these hoodlums are all flushed out of Anambra State before the yuletide period; the State’s Police Command is working everyday and night on this issue.

“We are not relenting in making sure that the state is free from all manner of crimes. This is just the beginning.”
