$620,000 bribe: Farouk Lawan’s trial begins today

Federal Government will today begin the trial of House of Representatives member, Farouk Lawan’s for allegedly demanding and receiving $620,000 bribe. The alleged bribe was said to have been taken from oil magnate, Mr. Femi Otedola during the last controversial fuel subsidy probe, where Lawan Farouk was the chairman.

The embattled lawmaker would be prosecuted for receiving bribe, breach of trust and stealing along with one official of the National Assembly. Legal luminary, Chief Solomon Adegboyega Awomolo SAN is expected to lead government legal team.

Already, the leave of the Federal Capital Territory High Court had been secured by the Federal Government to slam the criminal charges against Lawan at the High Court 4 in Maitama. Although a copy of the criminal charge could not be obtained at the press time, it was gathered that all necessary documentary and oral evidence had been assembled to facilitate prosecution.

The Federal Government lead lawyer, Chief Awomolo asked judiciary correspondents to wait till today to receive copies of the charge. Having been notified to appear in court, the embattled lawmaker was said to have immediately fortified his defence team to be led by Chief Mike Ozekhomes SAN.

A written application for the immediate bail of the suspect was said to have been prepared in advance, while eminent Nigerians that would surety him had been contacted.
